Knowing God: His Final Word

Knowing God: His Final Word

In the 1998 film, “The Truman Show,” that starred Jim Carrey, it was about a man Truman who thought he lived a ‘normal’ life, but it was in a box.  From birth to adulthood his life was on camera 24/7. It was the ultimate reality show for the audience as they kept the TV on all the time to see what Truman was up to.  Truman had no idea that he was being filmed. The world that he lived was a giant box.  What he didn’t know was there it was all set up for him, until one day he sailed to the edge of the box, and found a whole world outside the door of the studio.

The parallel for us out of this Hollywood movie is that we often come to think of God as if He is in a natural box that has enclosed walls of time and space. But God is supernatural, and somewhere deep inside ourselves we know that there is more to Him than what we can contain in our own human view.

This is why we have now spent five months (September – January) in a series we call “Knowing God.” We have used mostly the Old Testament passages around the book of Exodus and some of its stories to get a handle on what God says about himself. But beginning this Sunday we are sharpening our focus and using the incredible letter of Hebrews to rip off the veil and see the final chapter. The God that we have seen that is unapproachable; Holy beyond all measure; and more vast than the universe can expand to; but now He is approachable in Jesus Christ.

Please walk together with your church family through this study of Hebrews. I want to show you some simple tools of how to better understand the book of Hebrews itself… but far more important, I will always challenge us with two important questions…

  1. What difference does it make for me to know this or not?
  2. Is there a danger to me if I don’t pay attention?

Strap on your boots beginning this Sunday. We are parking in Hebrews for the next 13 weeks. Come on Sunday ready to learn, but more importantly, come ready to apply God’s Word and be changed through and through as we come to Know God.

How to prepare for Sunday:  Read slowly Hebrews 1:1 -2:4

Hebrews 1:1-2In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…”
