Knowing God: Jesus is Superior to the Angels and the Ultimate Human

Knowing God: Jesus is Superior to the Angels and the Ultimate Human

I have another Hollywood movie analogy for you this week… “Angels and Demons,” the 2009 film with Tom Hanks as the main character. Last week it was the Truman Show with Jim Carrey!  What we know of Angels is usually from a Hollywood movie. (are you thinking to yourself… ‘Billy, you watch too many movies!” I actually did not see Angels and Demons as it looked too dumb for me – but don’t tell Tom Hanks!)

This coming Sunday I am going to walk us through chapters 1 & 2 of the book of Hebrews, and Angels are one of the key topics in those chapters, and how that Jesus is Superior to the Angels. If you are like me, I honestly don’t think about angels a great deal. The Tom Hanks movie came into my head, and most of us in the modern world equate Angels to something like this suspense movie, but we have no idea what they might be, how this helps us Know God, and what’s the point.

But Hebrews chapters 1 & 2 tell us that Jesus Christ is Superior in every way to all angels, AND Jesus is the ultimate human being!  So if we are going to get a grasp on the theology of Jesus, we need to get a handle on the basic theology of angels and humanity. This is our task this coming Sunday February 19.

Our series now is called “Knowing God” and in this case, the last word about who God is, is found in Jesus Christ – “God’s final word!” (Hebrews 1:2). In order to prepare for our study this Sunday, spend some time reading Hebrews 1 & 2 carefully.

How to Prepare for this Sunday:

  • Read Psalm 8:
    • and see what it says about Mankind, Angels, and the Almighty. But when I hand this teaching time off to a small group, I challenge you to NOT spend much times on the details of the Angels, otherwise you will miss the point!
  • Read Hebrews 1 & 2:
    • The main point is how Jesus is superior in every way.
  • Read carefully Hebrews 2:1-4
    • The CHALLENGE, the APPLICATION, the SO WHAT! will be found as we head to the warnings that we find in Hebrews 2:1-4.  These warnings are tucked between chapters 1 & 2, and they are the guts of the application that we need to pay special attention to.

Please note… you will grow the most out of a Sunday teaching time by following it up with a discussion group. This is where we will dig into the ‘so what!’ If you do not have a small group, we have begun and will continue our “Table Talk” groups following the service, from 11:30am to 12 noon. This is a mini-version of what a small group will do. It is open to anyone who is currently not yet in a group.

See you Sunday!
