Genesis 12:1-3
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Sunday morning’s message is found in Genesis 12:1-3. This is the famous Covenant that God made with Abraham.  You may ask, why are we studying Abraham and this covenant promise from Genesis if our sermon series is entitled, “The Book of Jesus”? What does Genesis and the Covenant of Abraham have to do with Jesus?

Let me remind you of the theological path we are walking down. On this path, we are continually learning not only who Jesus is, but why Jesus. We not only are going to, in the new year, learn the stories of Jesus, but we must understand why Jesus is the centerpiece of all of God’s great story.  We cannot fully grasp who Jesus is and open up our lives to him unless we fully know and understand God’s great story AND how our personal individual story falls into it.

These key phrases and words help me identify the critical theological points on this path of learning.  Here is where we have gone so far:

God

God is the one and only holy and eternal Creator.

Jesus

Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God.

God With Us

We were created as his Image Bearers.
We shattered the Image.

God to us

He made a Covenant with us (this week’s study).

As we open Genesis 12 on Sunday morning, I want you to look for a few things:

  • What is a biblical Covenant and what does it have to do with me?
  • Where is Jesus in this Covenant to Abraham and the descendants of Abraham?
  • What is the direct link between God’s promise to Abraham?
  • What is the direct link between Abraham and his commitment to follow God’s leading 4000 years ago to a new land—and to us today?
  • Where is Jesus in this?
  • Am I a Covenant person?
