Is the Devil Real?

Is the Devil Real?

Have you noticed that the mention of the devil is not insignificant in our culture? I am not exactly a movie person, but even I know the movie, “The Devil wears Prada”. Can you think of other movies with the word, “devil” in the title? When my high school classmates wanted to form a band, and play “The Devil went down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band, they asked me to play the violin. It was not Mendelssohn or Beethoven, but I had a lot of fun. Even today, we reminisce about it. Many sports teams, professional and amateur, use the word, “devil”, somewhere in their names. Their mascot is the devil. Not only adults, but children get in on the fun too. They draw pictures of the devil. They put him in a red body suit, horns sticking out of his head, a tail, and of course, holding a pitch fork. They make the devil look cute and endearing. We see the devil appear in our culture in our everyday life. But do we believe the devil is real? What do you say?

According to Barna Research, 26% of Christians strongly believe the devil is real, with another 9% reporting they somewhat believe the devil is real. On the flip side, 40% strongly believe the devil is not real, and 19% somewhat believe the devil is not real. Keep in mind, we are talking about Christians here. What about you?

But what does the Bible have to say about this? My message this week is from Ephesians 6, and let’s read together and look together if there is anything in this chapter that can point us in the right direction. Please read ahead Ephesians 6.11–14, and I will see you Sunday morning.
