Digging Deeper: For Group Discussion and personal reflection

  • As a group talk about the term “Upward Mobility” and what you have understood that to mean in our world today?
    • How many of you can share a quick story of ‘upward mobility” for someone you know – in your family or elsewhere – a sort of ‘rags to riches’ story.
    • Isn’t that we are normally taught to strive for?
    • How does this passage give us the opposite of this when understanding who Jesus is?
  • As a group, take some time to read Philippians 2:1-5 and discuss what he is addressing for us.
  • Now as a group read carefully and slowly Philippians 2:6-11
  • Highlight here some of the key phrases and words that stand out as it describes who Jesus is.
  • Last week we studied the Christology hymn found in Colossians 1:15-23.
    • What are the similarities between that passage and today’s passage in Philippians 2?
    • What are any unique things stated in Philippians 2?
  • If you had to describe who Jesus to someone who did not know Christ using this passage, what would you say?
  • Review the diagram on the front of the sermon notes. Does it help you tell someone who Jesus is?
