When I was a very young boy, I like many young boys, would get into little playful arguments with my friends about how strong my dad was. I actually remember this. Now, I had a very good, strong, caring dad, and I never doubted how much dad cared for my brothers and me. We had a great upbringing actually. But it was kind of normal to have 6 year old boys brag to other boys how strong my dad was. “My dad could do ___________better than your dad.” I’m sure my dad’s stronger than your dad!” You can fill in the blanks… you get the idea. I was not trying to insult my friends and their dads, but I was just impressed with my own dad and I wanted to brag on him.
When it comes to describing who God is and what He can do, sometimes we can get into a similar conversation with others with the idea of proving how big and strong He is. You might remember a Christian radio song from the 1988 Rich Mullins song, “Our God is an awesome God.”
“When He Rolls Up His Sleeves He ain’t Just Putting on the Ritz
Our God Is an Awesome God
There Is Thunder In His Footsteps and Lightning In His Fists
Our God Is an Awesome God”
This coming Sunday I will be taking us to the ‘next chapter’ in our yearlong study of “Creation to New Creation.” I will be essentially looking carefully at Scripture to find out the essentials of “Who this God really is?” We have a tendency to want to begin the conversations about who God might be with trying to find out WHO I AM! This is totally the wrong direction. We start with God. We end with God. Just like Creation begins with God (“In the beginning God…” Genesis 1:1). We also will end with God (Revelation).
The words to Rich Mullins songs are catchy and a little out of the ordinary, but they do reflect something about God that we do not want to miss… He is awesome; He is powerful; He is Holy.
As you come to prepare for worship with the family this Sunday, I encourage you to read these Scriptures:
- Exodus 3:1-14
- Isaiah 6:3
- Revelation 4:6-8
Our God Is An Awesome God
He Reigns From Heaven Above
With Wisdom Power And Love
Our God Is An Awesome God
(from Rich Mullins song, “Awesome God” 1988)
Holy Holy Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come”
(From Revelation 4:8)
