A Man Has All That He Needs

A Man Has All That He Needs

Do you enjoy reading the Book of Psalms? I wish I could say yes, but I cannot; it is hard for me. Poetry, any poetry, is hard for me and the Psalms are saturated with poetry. I have to work harder than everybody else to understand the Psalms. But I know many people who really like the Psalms. I am amazed many of my friends know the Psalms really well. Sometimes when it is my turn to lead the Tuesday weekly prayer meeting, I like to start by reading a portion of a Psalm that I randomly picked, and ask everyone in the room if they know which Psalm is it – and they do!

You probably know this already, but there are 150 Psalms in the Bible. The longest Psalm is Psalm 119. If you forced me to memorize a Psalm, I would choose Psalm 117 because it is the shortest. But did you know the Book of Psalms is the third longest book in the Bible? Did you know that Jesus quoted from Psalms more than from any other book? Did you know that there were six different authors in Psalms? Did you know that Psalm 90 is likely the oldest Psalm? It was written by Moses about 1450 B.C. I didn’t know that.

Of all the Psalms, which Psalm would you say is the most well-known? More people say that that honor belongs to Psalm 23. Why do you think Psalm 23 is the most well-known? If you have an idea, I would love to hear it. Never mind that Psalm 23 is the most well-known Psalm, the Psalm is rich with reminders that God’s people are never alone and are deeply cared for by the Almighty. This Sunday, our time together is centered on Psalm 23. We will come, hear the Psalm together, think together, meditate together, and worship our Lord. See you Sunday!
