DAY OF THE LORD!

DAY OF THE LORD!

It was the spring of 1984, Patty and I were married with our newborn son (our son Brian) and living in Fort Worth, Texas. Our home was a mobile home park that was part of the seminary that we both attended, and in that particular spring I was trying to finish the last semester of my Seminary degree.  At that time, we had already decided that we were moving to Federal Way (we made that decision about March of 1984, so I was trying hard to wind things down in Fort Worth, graduate in May, so we could then pack up and move to Federal Way where we of course still are and still live! My greatest memory of that spring is that every morning I would leave our mobile home student village, walk across a small bridge that crossed a drainage area, then walked pass the student Rec center then into the building where my class was. I was so terribly anxious to finish and move on to the next phase of my life that I began to play a little bit of a game that helped mark off the day’s one by one. I had a calendar that I kept with my notebook and every day when I walked across the bridge and got to the other side, I took out my calendar and I “X-ed” off that day. At first, I had about 100 days to go… then 90… eventually 60… then only 30…. And I “X-ed” off my calendar with great anticipation to 20 days, 10 days, 5 days, and finally the last “X” which told me I had arrived at “THE DAY OF FINISHING” had and I was DONE! I wanted to finish school so badly and move here, in hindsight I have no idea what kind of grades I made, but I do know I completed it… finished it… and the final day had arrived which released me to the next important step in my life – to move here with this new (at that time new) Church.

This Sunday we are taking an opening step to look at what the Bible means when it says “The Day of the Lord” will come!  This is a common phrase in both the Old Testament and the New Testament yet is rarely understood.  There is a finality to it, so what does it mean? Every time a major event happens in the world or in our personal life, we often ask “is this that final day?”  I wanted us as a church in this series we are calling “Creation to New Creation” to make sure we deal with what Scripture says about the ultimate Day of the Lord.  We are honored to have Mike Lindholm, one of our Elders, teach about this this coming Sunday. I will be in church, and Tim will likely be too. Truthfully, it is heavy and profound but rarely dealt with in Church. But if you are going to understand “Creation to New Creation” then you must grasp this and then learn what to do with it.

In order to come prepared, then I ask that we spend time on Colossians 3:1-4.  Let’s mark off the days until we see one another!
