Biblical Grandparenting

Biblical Grandparenting

Do you know how many percent of the adult US population are grandparents? Take a guess. If you answered one-third, you get a lollipop! Up to one third of all adults are grandparents. That means that if we were to walk about in our cities of Federal Way or Northeast Tacoma, one out of every three adults we see are grandparents. In 1900, there were only 3.1 million people 65 years and older. By 1999, one hundred years later, that number had risen to 34.5 million. During that time, the percentage of Americans 65 years or older more than tripled. Today, there are more than 70 million grandparents in our nation. Each month, another 75,000 individuals become grandparents. The government estimates that by 2030, for the first time in history, there will be more people of grandparent age than children and youth, and that is just 5 years away!

Most grandparents like to be involved in the lives of their grandchildren. But even for those who see their grandchildren regularly, I sense they get to spend only a few hours with them at a time. Therefore, it is interesting to me research says 90% of adult grandchildren feel their grandparents had made a big impact on their life values and behaviors. That is 9 out of 10 adults. I believe grandparents will make even more impact on the lives of grandchildren going into the future.

We know that the Bible has some things to say about husbands. We also know it has some things to say about wives and children. But what about grandparents? What things does the Bible have to say about grandparents? What does God say is the role of grandparents? What are God’s expectations of them? Come this Sunday, and let’s read and think together what the Bible has to say to grandparents, and worship. See you Sunday.
